Neuwon - A Complete WON.Net Network replacement

Hey there

I have been working on a project called NeuWON, which is a complete replacement for the old WON network.

The NeuWON network is made of the official sierra WON.Net server software.

The network is very nearly complete and I have just about finished making the SWAT3 neuwon patch to enable internet play in game (without tunneling software to trick the game into playing through lan)

Please come and join us at neuwon.com

feedback is appreciated, thank you!

Wow this sounds amazing. This is exactly the sort of thing we have wanted since the Won servers went down. I see on your website you mention some games even have chat support. It would be awesome if Swat 3 did also.

I quickly looked at the files (without installing yet) and it seems to replace swat.exe with a no CD crack. Is this a generic crack? The reason that I ask is that the Last Resort mod uses custom modified NO CD cracks also and I want to check that the Last Resort mod will work with your Won server app.

If you haven't already please post on the Swat GOG.com forums since this is the only place you can buy Swat 3 I believe:

I am happy to report that VirusTotal website reports the files as clean (as does my personal Anti-virus software on my machine).

Included with the .ZIP file are the following files:
Code:
AccountWizard.ini Sierra.inf sierraup.cfg SierraUp.exe swat.exe

Contents of AccountWizard.ini:
Code:
[Version] VerDirServer1=dir1.neuwon.com:6003 VerDirServer2=dir2.neuwon.com:6003 VerDirServer3=dir3.neuwon.com:6003 [Account] AcctDirServer1=dir1.neuwon.com:6003 AcctDirServer2=dir2.neuwon.com:6003 AcctDirServer3=dir3.neuwon.com:6003

This is used for account creation for the network. You use the old Won account wizard tool installed with Swat 3 to create an account on the server after you have swapped out the AccountWizard.ini file with the old version. I fully tested out this part and it seems to work great. The only issue is that it doesn't send an email from the server to verify.

Contents of sierraup.cfg:
Code:
DisplayName: "SWAT3" ProductName: "SWAT3TGOTY" ExtraConfig: "EN" DirectoryServer: "dir1.neuwon.com:6003" DirectoryServer: "dir2.neuwon.com:6003" DirectoryServer: "dir3.neuwon.com:6003" Version: "2.1.0.0" PatchFolder: .\patch\ ResourceDirectory: "SierraUpRes"

The last two lines are interesting. It appears the app creates subfolders called "patch" and "SierraUpRes". Is this auto-downloaded in the background? This makes me a little nervous in terms of security.

Contents of Sierra.inf:
Code:
[Ident] ProductID=71388 FullTitle=SWAT3:TGOTY ShortTitle=SWAT3 Version=2.0.0.0 PatchVersion=2.1.0.0 UpdateAfter=09-01-2001 WebPage=http://www.neuwon.net/swat3/ EREGURL=http://reg.sierra.com/prodreg.html?sku=71388 COMPANYNAME=Sierra On-Line REGLEAF=SOFTWARE\WON\CDKeys FullName=SWAT3TGOTY PatchDate=10/25/01

This file seems to be included just so that in Swat 3 if you click on the Internet button on the main menu it will direct you to their website instead of a dead Sierra link. I like the app designer's thoroughness with this.

Quick examination of SierraUp.exe:

I just did a quick snoop in an old fashioned Hex Editor and from what I see the app alerts you to when an update is available and gives you the option of downloading it.

Quick examination of Swat.exe:

Again I just did a quick snoop in an old fashioned Hex Editor and it appears to be a standard NO CD crack. Not sure yet if they did anything else to make it work with their NeuWon server.

Next up is I install it in a sandbox and test it...

I ran the app in a Sandbox for safety. This probably prevented it from working properly:

Image 1:
In the first image the app seems to try to connect to Sierra.com to download a game patch. This seems really odd because this website was been down many years and only recently returned but without all the old content. They wouldn't have patches for Swat 3.

Image 2:
This second image shows the Proxy screen. It lists a bunch of ports you need open

Image 3:
In the third image you can see that the app tries to display a message of the day

Awesome! first I hear about a replacement for Raven Shield Server Browser and such since UbiSoft took that stuff down back in September now this!

Though its telling me it can't query the server list :(

Looks like various references to "neuwon.com" now replace "sierra.com" in the .exe, no online option in the Last Resort menus though so not made any changes to the LR .exe files since no way to try connect, not that I can atm anyway.

SierraUp stuff doesn't seem like it should be needed? just looks like an updater for SWAT, did it always have one? I mean it seems to be officially Sierra built but I don't recall it.

Tried to see if the server was just down on the site but clicking on "Network Status" on the website just tells me Access Denied.

I'll have to toy with my firewall and see if its that.

Edit:
Doesn't appear to be my firewall, disabled everything and same error.

It is not just you. Someone posted on the Swat3reunited site they can't connect to servers either.

SierraUp is part of the Neuwon package and is new. Not sure why it is needed since the first thing they say is your game must be patched to v2.1. It also seems to try to connect to Sierra.com which if I recall until recently was down. It doesn't host any Swat 3 files any more.

Looks like various references to "neuwon.com" now replace "sierra.com" in the .exe

Good catch. I am surprised this would be hard coded in. You would think the Won Network would have wanted full flexibility in that it would just take an .ini file to get updated if they changed their servers. Maybe the Sierra.com server responds with server information so all they have to do is change it there.

no online option in the Last Resort menus though

If this replacement Won Network does start working I will have to make some changes to Last Resort, lol.

I am just about to release version 0.7 finally. I have it all packaged up and I am just doing tests now to see if the installer works properly. If NeuWon starts working I will have to make a future update.

Speaking of which will you guys at Tactical Ape be able to host version 0.7 for me when it is ready?
